A former POW camp just outside Wells became the setting for one of Mendip’s most high-tech companies when it was developed in the post-war era as a factory by EMI Electronics.

EMI Electronics gave way to Thorn-EMI then Racal and now the factory is operated by the multinational defence and telecoms group Thales.

The Wells factory produces a range of defence equipment and recently secured a substantial order from the MOD for air-to-air refuelling guidance systems.
