Huge turnout for Food event at Kilver Court

89 local business people flocked to Mendip Business Exchange event to celebrate Somerset Food

The event began with a tour of Sharpham Park Spelt farm and mill where invited businesses were treated to an in-depth explanation of the differences between spelt and conventional modern wheat and the different processes required to process it.

Spelt grain from Sharpham Park is milled in situ, minimising its environmental impact and no part of the grain is wasted.

The end product is turned into flour for bread and other baked goods,  puffed cereals, pearl grain and muesli.  Visitors were seen disappearing into their cars with their goody bags of spelt products.

One local business remarked:  I particularly liked the tour of Sharpham Park, never having really seen a working mill before – or a farm that looked so picturesque, for that matter.

After the tours of the farm, businesses drove back through the evening sunshine for a celebration Somerset harvest supper and the main business of the evening.  The meeting was held at Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet.

Jayne Lunnon of Mendip Moments Ice cream shared her business experience and her delicious products, as did Andrew Quinlan of The Orchard Pig cider company.

The evening was opened with a fascinating talk from Chris Kelly of the BBC's The Food Programme.  Chris regaled the audience with tales of his life at  the BBC and urged the audience to make more of Somerset food and spread the word about the high quality produce from our area.

After the event, more ice cream and cider was consumed and everyone went home with a pocket full of business cards.

If you would like to attend future Mendip Business Exchange events, please register on our directory or contact Moira Davidson of the Mendip Association of Chambers of Commerce.  The next event will be in February and will be on the topic of Sales and Marketing.
