Bauhaus-style building solution suggested for Morlands.

Owners aim to transform building into a thriving place for business.

Owners Maidencroft  are already advertising the building on business letting websites.  Among the points listed to attract businesses are 15 year lease arrangements, with five-year rent reviews; a highly visible location; and good access to main roads.

However, this all depends on gaining planning permission.

Mark Brunsdon, who is acting as one of two letting agents involved in the property, said: “This offers a unique opportunity to secure a landmark building between Glastonbury and Street on competitive terms.

“The accommodation extends from 5,800sq ft to 17,500sq ft over three floors and can be refurbished to meet individual requirements. The building is suitable for employment and leisure uses subject to planning permission.”

The building was designed by local architects William Reynolds and Alves in the early 1930s. The style of the building and its construction allows unbroken areas of glazing, with no columns intruding. When the building was built it was used mainly for workshops, for cutting and stitching slippers, boots and coats.

It has been empty since the Morlands factory closed in 1982, despite various attempts and schemes to bring the site back to life.

After a string of owners and dashed hopes, the site was bought by the South West Regional Development Agency in 2001, but funding came to an end in 2009.

The red brick buildings are in the process of being turned into work spaces as a massive, community-led project, run mostly by volunteers.

Northover Mill is currently owned by the Beckery Island Regeneration Trust, which is developing it to create offices for local businesses and charities, while other parts of the site have already been redeveloped into the Morlands Enterprise Park, with firms including Screwfix and Thompson Group.
