JW Singer is a company that has been based in Frome since 1847, when John Webb Singer began a company to manufacture Church altar furniture in the town.

The Singer company’s long history owes much to its ability to move with the times and adapt to new markets, before long the company became known as a leading manufacturer of statuary – the scales of justice atop the Old Bailey and the bronze facings of the Albert Memorial in London being among the famous landmarks made in Frome.

After wartime diversions into munitions production, it was in the hot stamping of metals – particularly bronze – that the company came to prosper in the 20th century.

Hot stamping gave way to gravity diecasting and in the 1990s, the firm shifted to concentrate on the production of fire sprinklers and associated products. Singer is now part of the multi-national Tyco group.
