Slipper making has long been a part of the industrial heritage of the Street and Glastonbury area, and one Street-based company, Cosyfeet, has established itself as a world-leader in the market of Velcro slippers, socks and hosiery for the elderly.

Cosyfeet began trading in 1984, the brainchild of John and Maisie Rex who had noticed that people with wide fittings or painful feet were finding it hard to source suitable footwear.

The company was a successful cottage industry when it was bought – in 1991 – by former Clarks manager turned entrepreneur David Price.

Under Mr Price, the operation expanded rapidly – with a successful mail order operation and a burgeoning and highly successful internet sales business, as well as having their products stocked in around 200 outlets.

Selling largely to the retirement home market, Cosyfeet’s parent company now employs 110 people.
