Visitors to Shepton Mallet will not fail to notice a large plastic fawn positioned near the town’s boundary. This model is testimony to the importance of the Babycham brand of sparkling perry to the town.

Babycham was first developed by Francis Showering, a local brewer and cider maker, in the 1940s. Its success went nationwide in the 1950s and – although the brand has weathered some hard times in the last 30 years – it is still made in Shepton Mallet and has recently become something of a cult drink.

The sparkling perry is still made in Shepton at a state-of-the-art factory now owned by Gaymers – the world’s second largest cider-maker.

Dry Blackthorn; Gaymers Original; Olde English; K Cider and Addlestone’s are some of the other famous brands now made in Shepton Mallet.

The Showering family are still involved in cider-making – a trade they’ve been involved in since 1658. As Brothers Drinks, the family manufactures a range of ciders and perries from their base at a historic brewery in Shepton Mallet.
