Accounting 4 Business
"Accounting 4 Business aims to provide bookkeeping services for local SMEs with the added value of management accounts – these being monthly or quarterly reporting of the key elements of the accounts to enable the business owner to understand how the business is performing."
Why do you do what you do?
Many small businesses do not have systemised record keeping and rely on a Financial Accountant tot provide them with a Profit and Loss Account and Balance Sheet, together with a tax calculation several months after the year end.
My “mission” (!) is to explain how regular reporting can benefit a business and reduce the accountant’s bill, as well as enabling them to manage the business properly on a month by month basis. Without planning businesses can not grow successfully.
How long have you lived in Mendip?
I was brought up here, left for 17 years and came back in 1995.
How does Mendip inspire your work?
There are so many small businesses in the area so there is the opportunity to meet many other people who are experiencing the same highs and lows as I am in running their business. If I hit a problem or have a question I can usually find someone to help me out and give me the encouragement to step over it and carry on. There are plenty of networking opportunities to expand your customer base and to find support.
What are the advantages and drawbacks about living in this area?
The area is beautiful – something that I didn’t appreciate until I left home to live in a – albeit small – city. Coming back from Uni and smelling the silage, I knew I was home!!
The pace of life suits me and being able to drive around to clients without negotiating huge traffic jams plus look out of the window and sheep rather than shops when you get there is great.
If there is a drawback it’s the distances you have to drive to get to places such as Bristol and Exeter where a lot of the exhibitions/networking opportunities are located.
What's your favourite part of Mendip and why?
My favourite part is Wells and the Cheddar Valley – partly because I have great memories of growing up here, plus the strawberries, the fantastic Cathedral and Bishops Palace in Wells.
What would you say to encourage people to visit here and work here?
The business community is very friendly and small company entrepreneurs are very supportive of one another. Street, although a village, has fantastic shopping plus a theatre/cinema , two swimming pools, a nightclub and an Egon Ronay Chinese restaurant – what more could you want?!!
This complements Glastonbury and Wells which each have their own distinctive characteristics.
